Around 1600 yachts took part, and we spent a glorious day sitting on our terrace watching them go by. Unfortunately, the lack of wind towards the end of the day meant that only 800 finished. That said, they all provided the audience, on land and sea, with an amazing spectacle. Here are just a few more.......

All around the town are fabulous downland walks, and the coastal path will take you around the coast as far as you care to walk. There are also guided walks around the town. "Spooky ghosts, sinister smugglers, exotic wildlife, and tragic love tales - you'll be amazed at what there is to offer on a short walk around Ventnor". The Tourist Information Centre will point you in the right direction.

From our cottage there is a 12 minute walk down to the centre of town. However, if you are not up to walking up steep hills and flights of steps you would be well advised to drive the two or three minutes it would take to get there, because the walk back is very steeply uphill all the way.

Further afield, the first week in August is Cowes Week which culminates in a spectacular firework display.

There are historic and modern places to suit all tastes. Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House, Alum Bay and The Needles pleasure park, Fort Victoria Country Park, Golden Hill Fort, and the Pearl Centre to name but a few. Of course, the Isle of Wight is famous for its dinosaurs and a trip to the Dinosaur Museum is well worth while.

All over the Isle of Wight interesting and fun things are happening all the year round. Here are some more to whet your appetite...... sheepdog trials, the zoo, butterfly and fountain worlds, classic boat centre, brass rubbing, pottery, Robin Hill Country Park, Roman Villa, Toy and Doll Museum, Yarmouth Castle, Tennyson Down, Donkey Sanctuary, Steam Train, Waltzing Waters, and much, much, more. There are swimming pools, a fitness centre, riding stables and fishing lakes. And I haven't mentioned Appuldurcombe House with its Falconry and Owls, or the many child-friendly beaches. Oh, I could go on forever!

Whatever your taste, there is bound to be something to interest you not far away from Seagulls' Rest. Although a car is recommended, there is an excellent round-the-island bus service that takes passengers to most places of interest and amusement. Weekly tickets can be bought at the Tourist Information Office in Ventnor and represent good value for money.
